What it means

The headline numbers for this document: how many times it was opened, how far people got through it, and how long they spent.

How it's calculated

Views counts every open of a tracking link — the same person opening twice counts twice. Avg. completion is the furthest page reached divided by the document's page count, averaged across sessions. Avg. duration counts only time the document tab was actually visible, so a document left open in a background tab does not inflate it.

How to act on it

Compare completion against duration. High duration with low completion means people are stalling early — check the Friction Score to find where. Low duration with high completion usually means skimming.

What it means

Where attention landed on a given page — clicks, mouse movement and how long each region held the reader.

How it's calculated

The viewer reports click and pointer positions as fractions of the page (so the map stays correct at any zoom or screen size), plus dwell time per section. Positions from every session for the selected page are overlaid.

How to act on it

Look for attention pooling somewhere you did not intend — a dense table or a mis-set expectation. Clicks on things that are not links are a strong signal that readers expected something to be interactive.

What it means

How far down the document readers actually got, and where the drop-off happens.

How it's calculated

The viewer records the deepest scroll position reached, reported once per 10% band so a single reader cannot skew it. Engagement decay shows the share of readers still present at each page.

How to act on it

The steepest part of the decay curve is your weakest page. If most readers leave before a key section, move that section earlier.

What it means

A per-page grade flagging pages that readers laboured over, skimmed past, or abandoned.

How it's calculated

Each page's average dwell time is compared against the document's own baseline, then combined with drop-off at that page. Pages far above the baseline are tagged as friction, far below as skimmed, and unusually engaged pages as hot. The grade is a roll-up of those signals.

How to act on it

Fix friction pages first — they are where readers work hardest for the least reward. A skimmed page in the middle of an otherwise engaged document is usually filler that can be cut.

What it means

A playback of an individual reading session, or a page-by-page journey when a full replay is not available.

How it's calculated

The viewer records DOM changes and pointer activity during the session. All form inputs are masked before anything is sent, so typed content is never captured. Where no replay data exists but page events do, the session is shown as a page journey instead.

How to act on it

Watch a session from your most important reader. It surfaces hesitation and re-reading that aggregate numbers cannot.

What it means

Notes readers left for you, including any pinned to a specific spot on a page.

How it's calculated

Notes are only collected when a link has notes enabled. A pinned comment stores the page and the position on it as a fraction of the page, so the pin stays correct at any zoom level.

How to act on it

A pinned comment tells you exactly which sentence caused a question — usually the fastest fix in the whole document.

What it means

The device types and browsers your readers used.

How it's calculated

Derived from the browser's user-agent string on each open. Grouped into device families and browser families rather than exact versions.

How to act on it

If a meaningful share reads on mobile, check your document survives a narrow screen — dense tables and small type rarely do.

What it means

Every tracking link for this document, with the settings each one enforces and how it has performed.

How it's calculated

Views and visitors are counted per link, so you can compare audiences. Unique visitors de-duplicates within a link. Total time sums completed reading sessions for that link.

How to act on it

Give each recipient their own link — that is what makes per-audience comparison possible. Expire a link rather than deleting it if you want to keep its history.

What it means

Hides opens that came from your own side — a teammate opening the link, or traffic from your own network — so the numbers reflect the recipient.

How it's calculated

A view is marked internal at the moment it happens, for one of two reasons: the person opening it was signed in as a member of this workspace, or the request came from a private network address. Anything else counts as external — an open whose origin cannot be determined is never assumed to be internal. Because the flag is stored with the view, every tab filters consistently: views, visitors, completion, duration, heatmap, friction, replays, comments and devices all move together. Opening your own document with the Preview button is never counted as a view at all.

How to act on it

Turn it on before sharing numbers with anyone. Leave it off while testing your own link, so your own opens stay visible.
